82ND STREET RESIDENCE
New York NY
JCA renovated this classic three bedroom, two bathroom apartment in an Emery Roth designed building on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Years of benign neglect had left the apartment in very rough condition, requiring a complete gut renovation. We reviewed a range of possible new apartment layouts with our client, ultimately choosing to maintain the general contours of the original layout, which had a clear spatial hierarchy rare in more modern buildings.
Prior to demolition, the original baseboard, crown moulding, door, and window details were documented and later carefully reproduced during construction. However, the project was not simply a reconstruction. Within Roth's framework, we carefully updated the residence to accommodate the needs of a contemporary family of four. We dramatically increased closet and storage space throughout the apartment, reconfigured the kitchen and master bathroom, and planned a new central heating and air conditioning system. All of these changes were carefully tailored to integrate seamlessly with the look of the original sections of the unit.
The apartment's traditional feel is complemented by contemporary custom millwork, including display shelving in the living room, an A/V cabinet in the family room, and desk, shelves, and a full wall of modular desks, shelves, and storage cabinets in the study.
